Mobile Monday: iPhone XR and the Latest Apple Watch Series

Posted Sep 17, 2018

Every September, Apple hosts its Gather Round event, announcing the new generation of iPhones, Apple Watch, iPads and accessories. Last week, the company revealed their 12th-generation phones along with major features now available in the Apple Watch.

iPhone XR
The latest and greatest from Apple includes three new smartphones: the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. Preorders for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max begin September 21st, while the iPhone XR will be available for preorder on October 19th. So what’s changed? What should users look forward to? Well, the iPhone XR has seen some big improvements worth noting.

The iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch LCD display, compared to the 4.7-inch display the iPhone 8 offered, and has replaced its 3D Touch with Haptic Touch technology. A larger, clearer screen that’s more responsive than ever is something mobile gamers will appreciate. Now that the screen is larger, the home button has been removed and Touch ID has been replaced with Face ID user authentication. Users will also see a huge difference in iPhone speed and longevity, with the new A12 Bionic chip and long-lasting battery life (25 hours of talk time!) The iPhone XR is a big step up from the iPhone 8, in terms of features, and will cost consumers between $749 and $899 depending on storage size.

Speaking of storage size, the iPhone XR will offer not only 64GB of storage, but also 128GB and 256GB, so you can take as many selfies as you want without having to worry about space. Video playback time has also been increased from 13 to 16 hours and audio playback has jumped from 40 hours to 65. Although this new phone will weigh slightly more than its predecessor (1.62 ounces to be exact), it will be available in red, yellow, white, coral, black, and blue!

The Latest Apple Watch
The Apple Watch Series 4 was also a big release, considering the amount of health-related features now available on the device. The new S4 chip makes the watch twice as fast and the screen is a third bigger, which helps in catching details with a quick glance. This watch is also equipped with haptic feedback as well as a new gyroscope, which detects if you’ve fallen down. If the device detects a fall, an emergency screen appears, where users can call for help with a single tap. If no movement is detected, the watch will automatically call 911 for you. To add, the feature Breathe reminds Apple Watch owners to take a break and take deep breaths every once in a while. The electric heart-rate sensor also helps in detecting heart rhythm irregularities, sending users notifications when things seem off. All of these new features can be life-saving, and are part of Apple’s HealthKit initiative, which launched in 2014.

This watch helps users take a big step towards living a healthier and safer life, but it comes with a price tag. This watch will cost $400 with GPS service or $500 with GPS and cellular service. Preorders for the latest Apple Watch have already begun, and the device will be available on September 21st!
